Can you install other games? That is an issue with your drive, but if you can install other things it's not likely the hd. It could be the drive dieing, or it could be the connectors to it from the motherboard are loose or going bad. If you have a desktop, open it up and make sure everything is snug. Worse case scenario is a port on your motherboard is going bad, best case is it's just one of those things or it's the disc.

If you are using a newer board though then you probably have Seta ports and can just plug it into another port. If it's the same file every time then it is either your disc or your drive. It is a big file. Try cleaning the cd really good and making sure all your pc bits are in snug. You can also try a manual install. It might work because you can just pull the files off the cd and when it stops at some of them you can try to grab those files again without starting the entire thing over.

If the install stops in the same place on a manual install then it could be a problem with your CD and you should get another, or a problem with your HD because it is tring to write that file to a bad sector and you should run a disc scan. Okay, first I am thankful for this post because cleaning the disk worked for me. But FUCK, (sorry for the language), I'm furious that I had to find this to try that and that it wasn't suggested in the EA support files that come with the game! I've been trying to install Sims 3 for, literally, three days! I went through everything the EA support suggested, including fragmenting my computer, freeing space on my hard drive, disk cleanup, file corruption checks, and about ten other things that all took huge amounts of time sitting around waiting for scans to complete. Nothing worked, to the point where I'd given up and decided the game just wouldn't work on my system, and then in the end the thing that did work was something as simple as CLEANING THE DISK. *shakes head* I really don't know why that isn't the first thing EA suggests you try.
